The Ofrenda is a Spanish word that translates to English as an offering. The Ofrenda is traditionally associated with Dia de Muertos, the annual Mexican celebration of remembrance of friends and family who have died. In the western world it is known as All Saints Day. The Ofrenda is generally filled with food and trinkets and pictures of those who are being remembered. As a small vignette of a traditional ofrenda my quilt depicts a skull in a bed of marigolds – traditional flowers that adorn the Ofrenda. The Ofrenda quilt is a part of a broader exploration into how different cultures around the world remember and pay tribute to their loved ones who have passed on.
